Our approach is based on the Strategic Choice Cascade, which was developed by A.G. Lafley (Executive Chairman of Procter & Gamble) and Roger Martin (ex-dean of Rotman School of Management). They wrote the book Playing to Win: How Strategy Really Works, which was written in 2013, and explores the difficulty in making strategic choices and discusses ways to overcome it. More specifically, we work together with you to answer the questions in the first three boxes of the cascade shown below, in order to develop your strategic narrative.
There are many ways in which we can work together but the following is a typical process we use to provide the most assistance in the least amount of time and effort. Strategy work can be timing consuming both in terms of the actual time spent by the participants involved and the calendar time it takes to complete the work. As a small non-profit that generally does not collect fees for our services, we believe it is important that we work effectively together with you, so that we can maximize our overall impact. How we do this together with you is a consideration in our initial consultations.
We have an initial consultation to discuss if your idea, startup or business is at a point where making/updating strategic choices and developing a strategic narrative make sense. This is dependent on many factors that we can discuss during the consultation.
Before embarking on a more detailed strategic process using the cascade, it is often helpful to get a limited set of your key stakeholders together to work through the first three boxes/questions of the cascade. This allows you to see the potential results quickly and can often be achieved with a very limited investment of time.
We work together to identify and interview stakeholders that you believe can be a valuable part of your strategic process. As indicated, our initial goal is to create a draft of the first three steps of the Strategic Choice Cascade (i.e., Defining your "Winning Aspiration", and making the "Where to Play" and "How to Win" choices).
Our team will draft a narrative presentation that further defines your winning aspiration and the strategic choices you have made. It will also highlight the most important activities required to achieve your aspiration. We then review the narrative with you for feedback.
We have the ability to go deeper into the cascade to address what capabilities and management systems you need. This essentially goes beyond creating a narrative into strategic planning and implementation support. This is not something we world normally do given the effort involved, but we are open to discussions on doing this work with you if it makes sense for you and for us.
